Developing income streams for your work

Join Ruth Lee for this one-day, in-person workshop for dancers, teaching artists and community practitioners about where and how you might generate income for your work.

It will explore approaches, options and models, and pinpoint the range of key skills that help you generate income. Ruth is an arts consultant , mentor and life coach who is highly experienced in working with dance artists and organisations across many genres. Unmissable.

This course complements the Developing Income Streams for Participatory Arts Practice online programme – which workshop participants can access free of charge either before or after attending the in-person workshop. Participants may also find is useflul to be familiar with Proof of the Pudding - a free of charge three-part toolkit for participatory artists, to help demonstrate impact, build partnerships and communicate to get your messages across. Neither of these are pre-requisites!

By taking this course you will:

  • Emerge with a better understanding of yourself as a small business, greater confidence in your own knowledge and experience and a greater sense of control of your ability to develop income
  • Better understand how to articulate your strengths and your value
  • Gain basic planning skills
  • Increase your confidence in strategic thinking and make an outline ‘plan’ for income generation to continue working on beyond the workshop
  • Gain a better understanding of what you are working on or could be working towards
  • Learn more about the follow up online session in Autumn to check in on your plans and progress.

About Ruth Lee

Ruth is a freelance consultant working in the Arts and Cultural sector. She has over 30 years’ experience in development and leadership roles across a diverse range of settings, including educational, not-for-profit, and commercial. An experienced fundraiser at local, regional, and national level Ruth offers participants in her workshops and programmes a ‘lucky dip barrel’ of knowledge gathered from the work she has done with the diverse group of individuals and organisations.

Ruth brings to the Summer Intensive for People Dancing her experience in developing and delivering both strategic and tactical business plans for financial management, income generation, and fundraising. Ruth is a highly valued mentor to experienced and emerging artists. Ruth co-authored the ‘Developing Income Streams for Participatory Arts Practice’ for People Dancing and co-created the ‘Proof of the Pudding’ a resource for artists to help them demonstrate the value of their work.

From 2013-2020 Ruth was the Director of Development for People Dancing and until November 2022 she was the Executive Director for Aakash Odedra Company (Leicester Dance Theatre). Since December 2022 Ruth has been working as a freelance consultant with clients including London Borough of Camden, Art Reach, Inspirate, We Are Epic, Round in Circles Productions, Platform31, Bamboozle Theatre, Beth Storie, Laura Dredger- Move Space and Advancing Women in Dance supporting their income generation planning, fundraising and dynamic thinking. Ruth is the Executive Director of Hubbub Theatre, a learning-disabled theatre company based at Deda in Derby. She is a trustee of The Spark Arts for Children and a member of the advisory board for Sidekick Dance Company a learning disabled dance company based in Leicester.
